James Cook University (JCU) combines excellence in teaching and research with a unique tropical setting on the coast of northern Queensland. It is considered one of Queensland’s strongest universities and is Australia’s leading tropical university. The University takes its name from the renowned eighteenth century English navigator and explorer James Cook (1728 – 1779) who first charted the east coast of Australia. He contributed significantly to the world of science – in geography, astronomy and natural history.
JCU’s main campuses are located in the safe, fast-growing coastal cities of Townsville and Cairns in northern Queensland, near to two World Heritage-listed natural wonders – the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Wet Tropics rainforests. Both of these specialist environments provide living laboratories for many JCU courses. The climate at both campuses is tropical, with more than 320 days of sunshine a year and average temperatures of 31°C in summer and 26°C in winter. The university also has a city-centre campus in Brisbane operated by the Sarina Russo Higher Education group, which offers business, tourism, accounting and information technology programmes. Additionally, JCU has an international campus in Singapore.
JCU prides itself on offering flexible degrees in a wide range of subject areas. It offers over 170 undergraduate programmes and more than 120 postgraduate programmes in the arts, business, commerce, accounting, creative arts, education, engineering, information technology, health and biomedical sciences, science, social sciences, tourism, hospitality management, psychology and sport and exercise science.
The university is among the top 500 universities in the world, according to the recent rankings published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Institute of Higher Education in 2009.
In particular, JCU is world renowned for its research in a number of areas relating to its tropical location – key international research strengths include tropical science, marine science (particularly marine biology and including coral reef ecology), tropical biology and conservation (including rainforest science), earth sciences, tropical health and medicine and tourism. Six JCU academics are among the top ten cited scientists in marine science, four of whom work within the School of marine Biology and Aquaculture. A Federation Fellow also researches in the School – Federation Fellows are considered world-leaders in their chosen field of research. In addition, Australia’s first department of tourism was established at JCU and four of the world's top 50 tourism scholars work at the university, giving it an exceptionally high concentration of top research in the tourism area.
The university has excellent research facilities which it uses to develop all of these areas, including island and rainforest research stations. It enjoys a unique partnership with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AimS), and recently established the Centre for Excellence – Innovative Science for Sustainable Management of Coral Reef Biodiversity at Townsville.
JCU is renowned for its friendly campus atmosphere, good staff-to student ratios, effective support services and highly-qualified teaching staff. Students at JCU have access to a comprehensive network of support services to help them make the most of their time at the university and to ensure their studies are successful.

Student Testimonials

Study Abroad (studied Microbiology at Townsville campus)
“Leaving home in winter and arriving in summer with a 40 degree nice change. The lifestyle in Townsville and the friendly atmosphere at James Cook University, made it easy to adapt to and enjoy a new part-time home and life. The practical parts of my studies were quite valuable to my degree. It is an opportunity I won’t forget and it has changed my life in a positive way.”

”Studying at James Cook University in Cairns has been a unique experience for me. Cairns is a fantastic place to study and live; it is close to beautiful beaches, the tropical rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The university campus, being situated in such a natural location, was a refreshing change from the pace I have experienced in bigger cities.
JCU in Cairns offers comparably small class sizes and a fairly small campus with modern facilities. I found the lecturers very approachable and they provided good quality feedback on my work. The staff in the International Student Office is extremely friendly and helped me with whatever problem I had.
Because of the fact that JCU has many overseas students I could meet, befriend and interact with students from various cultural backgrounds. With campuses at different locations, JCU made it possible to me to do courses not only in Cairns but also in Townsville.
All in all, studying at JCU was very enjoyable, flexible and invaluable for my future career. Doing the MBA Program at JCU was one of the best decisions in my life.
My recommendations to future students would be to take the opportunity to study at JCU as it offers quality, flexibility and teaching excellence - and all this in a unique tropical setting. Stay as long as you can so you can fit in travel and really experience life there. The geographical location of Tropical North Queensland makes it an ideal focal point for any adventures you plan to pursue. ... oh and by the way, don't forget the insect repellent as the mozzies are very hungry there!”
